It’s been one week since police killed George Floyd, and the protests are just beginning. It is our job as human beings to show our support for our communities, and the Black Lives Matters movement is high on that list. Entertainers have so much influence with their platforms, so I took to social media to see what our famous latinos were talking about. The latino communities have also suffered at the hands of police, but this is not about us right now, this is about putting an end to the hate that Black Americans have been dealing with for too long. This is a time to say to the BLM community that we hear you, we see you, we support you, and although we are not black, we will fight for you. It is not white versus blacks, it is everyone versus racists. We will show up in solidarity, because that is what unity and community is all about.

I checked Twitter to see what Jennifer Lopez was sharing on her platform (where she has a whopping 122 million followers), she has a stage that can heavily influence many people. Lopez posted the image below, which I felt was very powerful because it is such a true statement; racism comes in all colors.

She also took to her Instagram to post a video speech from the famous civil-rights activist Martin Luther King. Her comment on her post said,

“My beautiful friends… This is a matter of humanity!!! Of goodness and basic human kindness and decency!!! My heart is breaking. So many people are hurting right now.

How can anyone say they love this country and not do something when they see lives cut short because of the color of their skin?

We need to erase the fear and hatred that exists. Not erase people. We are all God’s children. We need to love and appreciate all the beautiful things that every individual person is. There are more of us who live a life of love and acceptance than those who live in rage and hate. Do not let the angry, and hateful win!! Say something. Do something. Let’s build bridges not burn them.

We have lost our way these past few years but we can find our way back. We need to speak up and speak love. Every chance we get… we need to storm the polls in November and VOTE… we need change!!! Somethings got to change!! 🙏🏻🙏🏼🙏🏽🙏🏾🙏🏿

We need to see more of our entertainers using their platforms for good, they owe that to our communities that are suffering.

Many of us in the Latinx community know actor comedian John Leguizamo who is infamous for his humor. For the last few years he has used his fame to bring awareness to political issues. His solo show, Latin History for Morons, proves his attempt to educate the history of all latinos, which also happen to include Afro-latino’s.

On his Instagram he posted a photo which shows a white civilian man going for his gun, right  in front of a police officer, with Leguizamo’s headline, “If you are brown or black you would never! But he can!” It is so disturbing but true that if a person of color were to pull out a gun, they would most likely be shot dead.

George Lopez known for his standup comedy and acting, has also taken to his Instagram to show the people what is happening in our country. In the video link you can see the residence being attacked for just being on their porch, their own property.

His caption reads,

“This isn’t in the middle of a riot or looting, this is a residential area. These are citizens in front of their own homes on their own property. These are VERY troubling times… PLEASE BE SAFE🙏🏽 “

He also posts another video of the Latino community showing their support for the protests.

He writes,

“RAZA with a show of SOLIDARITY 💪🏽💪🏾 in protest!! These injustices affect us as well and we need to show support for each other to present a united front in the face of a shared adversary: RACIAL INJUSTICE/POLICE BRUTALITY ✊🏾✊🏽✊🏿✊🏼 We all know, not all cops are bad… but we also know that the ones that ARE have NO BUSINESS w/a badge on the streets. They need to be identified and relieved of their duty. You MUST abide by the SAME laws you uphold and enforce. There is no grey area there. Stay Safe🙏🏽🙏🏾.”

Cardi B who is known well for her rapping and uncensored social media presence, took the time to educate her followers and encouraged them to get political by reaching out to their state. She posted, “It will literally take less then a minute of your time.THANK YOU !”. In the image below, it provides quick instructions on how to reach out to Mike Freeman who is the District Attorney of Minneapolis. He is responsible for holding the police officers accountable for the murder of George Floyd

Latinos are a huge part of our communities and we have so much influence on our people. It is good to see our famous counterparts making moves in the right direction. I can not wait to see what else they will do to show their support. At the end of the day we are all responsible for what is happening, to show your support you can click here and here. There is always a way and it is our job to educate ourselves! Let us stand up mi Raza,  just imagine not having your right to breath!
