Blinded by the Light is a coming-of-age film about a teenager named Javed from a British-Pakistani Muslim family. He discovers the music of Bruce Springsteen, which changes his life. This is based on the life of journalist Sarfraz Manzoor and his love for Bruce Springsteen. It was nominated for Best Film and Best Actor in the 2019 SIFF Awards.

The Big Sick is another based-on-a-true-story film, but a lot more direct. Kumail Nanjiani plays himself, and wrote it with his current wife, Emily V. Gordon, about them falling in love and their cultures clashing. She gets a mysterious disease, which forces him to face her feisty family, his family’s expectations, and his feelings. It is available on Amazon Prime. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

A Separation is about a couple separating, while having conflicts with hiring a lower-class caregiver for an elderly father who has Alzheimers, as well as the emotional journey the daughter has in response to the separation. This film won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012, being the first Iranian film to win this award. It has also won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as the Golden Bear for Best Film and Silver Bears for Best Actor and Best Actress in the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. It is available on Amazon Prime for rent.

Ramy is about a Muslim-U.S.-American man living in North New Jersey. He goes through a spiritual journey, showcasing the conflicts between the Muslim culture and the United States culture. Ramy is available on Hulu, with two seasons under their belt. They won a Golden Globe for Best Actor for TV Musical or Comedy, and are currently nominated for three Emmys (Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Director in a Comedy Series).
