We all know Hollywood as the city with all the movie stars. But these days, the film industry is moving out of Los Angeles. Here are the top ten movies and TV shows that were filmed outside of the City of Angels.

TV Source Magazine

New York City, New York

Gotham is less about Batman and more about the city itself. The show starts right when Bruce Wayne’s parents were killed; when he was a kid. The entire show revolves around Gotham prior to Batman being a part of the city.

San Francisco, California & Atlanta, Georgia

Marvel’s Ant-Man The movie follows a man out of prison who becomes a superhero by working with scientists. He obtains a suit, which then turns him to the size of, you guessed it, an ant. The film follows his journey as he becomes the infamous “Ant-Man” later seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Atlanta, Georgia

Stranger Things is a Netflix original that has a huge cult following. The show is about the disappearance of a young boy, which reveals how dark a seemingly peaceful small town is. Supernatural things occur, creating more questions than answers.

The Buzz Paper

Toronto & Ontario, Canada

The Handmaid’s Tale has been consistently nominated for a number of Emmys and other awards. Based on the classic novel, the series is set in a dystopian future where women are treated as property of the state. With the few remaining fertile women, and the decreasing population rate, these women are forced into sexual servitude. The show is available on Hulu.

Inside Pulse

New York City, New York

The Post with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep is one that the Academy loved. It’s about the Washington Post and their publication of the Pentagon Papers. It showcases the leak, the politics, the betrayal, and the hardship that came with publishing the Papers, which made the public start to question the government.

Rooftop Films

New York City, New York

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is notorious for being the show that made Amazon Prime a competitor to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Their original show was nominated for TWENTY Emmys, breaking records to how many noms one show received. Mrs. Maisel is a young woman living in Manhattan pursuing a comedy career in the late-50s.

New York City, New York

The Greatest Showman has huge names like Hugh Jackman, Zach Efron, and Zendaya, which really brought in its popularity. The movie follows the man who created the circus. We see how Jackman’s character goes from poors to riches, and what it took for him to get to where he ended up.

Minnesota State University

New York City, New York

While Heath Ledger’s performance of the Joker will always be remembered, Phoenix had an amazing performance as well. The Oscar-nominated motion picture Joker follows a troubled comedian as he is disregarded by society and the community around him. This is what you call an “origin story” that superheroes tend to get, but this time, about the villain.

Atlanta, Georgia

Watchmen has been getting a lot of attention with their recent Emmy nomination. The show is about an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws. Watchmen embraces the graphic novel it is based off, and created a limited series show available on HBO.

New York City, New York

Hunters is a new Amazon Prime series that has gained a lot of popularity during this quarantine. They have recently been renewed for another season, and it probably won’t stop there. Big stars like Al Pacino and Logan Lerman work together on fighting Nazis that survived after the Holocaust.

You probably noticed that New York and Georgia showed up a number of times. That’s because of those state’s tax incentives. Filming in these states actually is CHEAPER than filming in expensive states like California, or even expensive cities like Los Angeles.

When looking up nominations for Emmys, Oscars, and Golden Globes, and then looking into where those projects were filmed, you start to notice how little is really being filmed in Los Angeles.
