ABTV Loves Parks and Recreation

Our favorite Parks and Recreation characters reunited for a special Pawnee special for Feeding America. Leslie Knope, Ron Swanson, April and Andy, Ann and Chris and all of the usual favorites came together for one night to put smiles on our faces, teaching us all about the health guidelines we should follow.

Based in our current pandemic world, all of the Parks and Rec characters are dealing with social distancing, their own version of Zoom (launched by their own local Pawnee tech company, Gryzzl), home-schooling children, as well as having family members be front-line workers. Leslie Knope calls down the phone tree of Pawnee love… All while trying to avoid Garry Gergich… and his dog or poop emoji face filters.

The moment Leslie Knope’s face popped up on my screen I felt like I was back in Pawnee, Indiana fighting for the well-being of the citizens of the small town and the drama of the local parks department.

In just 30 minutes, the Parks and Rec team took me back to a time when  I loved watching them every week. Here’s my favorite moments of the special:

1. Seeing Leslie Knope and Ben Wyatt still have chemistry and are rocking their jobs

One of the best love stories on television that we followed religiously for years. They not only are balancing family and work life (well, Ben is having a tougher time homeschooling the kids and being a Congressman…and now he has a Cones of Dunshire Claymation film script idea.. Oh we know that’s going to be good!) They are still quirky and still perfect for each other. Maybe Ben should double check and make sure those cleaning bottles are sealed.

Also, seeing Leslie Knope running the Department of Interior is what I expected, and it makes me so happy!

2. Ron Swanson in his wooden cabin and the appearance of Tammy Two

The ultimate outdoorsman and cynic, Ron Swanson knows how to prepare for anything. I want to get my hands on that venison since there’s enough to go around for everyone (12-years worth that is!) Well, except Garry, maybe…

I missed Leslie and Ron’s unconventional friendship and banter. I wanted more! I will just have to watch the craft show Making It to get my little fix instead.

One of the funniest moments of the night was when real-life spouses Nick Offerman and Megan Mullaly (who played Tammy Two on the series) made a big reveal as she tried to sneak into Ron’s home, currently tied up. It was truly hilarious and true fans really freak out! I’m a little worried for those wild animals in the forest as well, Ron.

3. Dr. Jeremy Jamm & Ya Heard! With Perd?, Dennis Feinstein & Johnny Karate

These iconic characters are a major part of the Parks and Rec canon of comedy.

As Leslie and Ben went on a PR tour across Indiana to remind families to wash their hands, keep social distancing, follow the government health guidelines and get the help they need mentally and physically… these characters make it even more fun.

Dr. Jeremy Jamm (that Orthodontist you never want) is offering home delivery kits! You know it’s legit since he’s in his bathrobe…and rocking his quarantine haircut. Dennis Feinstein and his rich friends are offering the miracle cure that will “repel all viruses”, Perd Hapley (one of our favorite hosts) is his chill self, and of course Johnny Karate for the kids!

The alter-ego of Andy Dwyer that we all love, Johnny Karate tries to remind kids to stay strong, be nice to their parents, and wash their hands. Fans be warned we know he hasn’t washed his hands in 38 years, eeek! But remember Johnny Karate wants us to know, “If we pull together, we can karate chop this virus! Things will go back to normal” Let’s do it.

4. Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins – Besties Reunited!

One of my favorite friendships from a tv show; Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins are one of the best representations of female empowerment and support in every way possible for each other’s ambitions and personal lives. I love them together and love them separately. We see that Ann is still working as a nurse and is on the front-line and quarantining away from her husband, Chris Traeger. This moment is relevant for so many around the world and a beautiful reunion of my fave ladies.

5. At Home with Joan Callamezzo of Pawnee Today – The Perfect Talk Show for Quarantine

Joan Callamezzo is the representation and emotional rollercoaster that many of us are feeling in quarantine, all isolated in our homes. As tv shows try to produce shows from home and individuals are learning to work from home, we are feeling the frustration of social distancing. We might even find ourselves, like Joan, talking to ourselves, perhaps even to our dolls, pets or inanimate objects? Poor Joan, we feel ya….Drinking martinis (or your drink of choice) with extra olives during the day and throwing out all social and Zoom call etiquette. Relatable segment with that Parks and Rec charm. Loved it.

6. Sing-A-Long to “5000 Candles in the Wind” for Li’l Sebastian Our Beloved Miniature Horse

This song sung by Andy Dwyer (Chris Pratt) gave me a tear in my eye. Bringing me  back to how much we love this miniature horse and this little Pawnee community we all miss. All of the cast members joined in with their smiling faces and it hit me like a ton of bricks – Spread your wings and fly!

This was the comedic respite we all needed during this time and I wish Leslie Knope could give us our health updates everyday from now on. Hopefully we can all visit a national park soon and think of Leslie Knope and the crew. In the meantime, catch the full special here and give what you can to Feeding America.
