Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are official citizens of Greece! As a Greek-American myself, I am so happy to see such prominent figures in Hollywood represent my heritage and my family’s homeland. The news was announced by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis via Instagram posing with the couple and his wife with the caption: “@ritawilson @tomhanks are now proud Greek citizens!”

Normally, to earn the dual citizenship:

  • You are born in Greece or your parent must have origin
  • Born in Greece to parents who are long term residents
  • Attend primary or secondary school in Greece for at least six years
  • Claim Greek origin through an ancestor
  • By Adoption
  • By Enlistment in the Greek Armed Services
  • By Naturalization

Although Wilson’s mother is of Greek descent, her husband Hanks is Portuguese and English descent. Even though Hanks did marry someone of Greek descent, under normal circumstances he would not have been able to apply. However, the couple, along with their kids, were able to obtain their dual citizenship because the country offered them citizenship as a thank you for helping to raise funds for the victims of the deadly wildfires that took place in 2018, according to Fox News.

A fun fact about the couple: Wilson was raised Greek Orthodox. Although not mandatory, Hanks converted to Greek Orthodoxy when he wed Wilson. They also have a home in Greece on the island of Antiparos.

Back in January, Hanks tweeted that he was “starting off 2020 as an honorary citizen of Greece.”
