This year’s PaleyFest had a star-studded lineup which includes actors from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ozark, One Day at a Time, and Queer Eye to name a few. For those who don’t know Paleyfest LA is almost like a comic-con for TV shows. Each show they feature has a panel of actors and the creators from the show to talk behind the scenes, what to look forward to, etc. While normally the event is held in person, this year each panel is recorded and available to watch on Youtube.

Right now I’m going to highlight one of my favorite shows, available to watch on Amazon Prime, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The show has 20 nominations in total this year so far.

Rachel Brosnahan opened up the panel by saying she is so grateful to be on a show that people are able to laugh at and enjoy during these trying times. What’s special about this show’s panel is because there are so many cast members it was divided up into two parts. One with the cast members who are her family and those involved in Midge’s life, the second part are the people she’s met throughout her career thus far. Here are the top 5 moments the cast and crew talked about on this year’s panel.

  1. The show basically predicted we would be in a pandemic. Ok this is kind of a stretch, but in the finale episode of season 3, Midge gives Joel a “housewarming gift” when he opens up his club. Any guess what that could be? Toilet paper is correct. When asked why Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of the show, said she thought the gesture would come off as romantic. And that is, given our current state. Be on the lookout for that roll of toilet paper since the cast joked they were going to auction it off!
  2. Most of the cast felt like they were on a “theatrical high”: When ask how Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub (Rose and Abe) were able to bounce off each other, Marin said besides learning her lines inside and out, she didn’t even know where the scene would end up until she would watch it back later. The others really pushed her to be the best. But she explained it as if she would almost “black out” when filming and another persona would take over. Some of the other actors agreed with this thinking.
  3. This Season brought some fresh blood and some changing times: In the newest season, the audience is introduced to a chinese-american character, Mei, who is played by Stephanie Hsu. When asked about her character, she said she really enjoyed playing a chinese-american character who wasn’t stereotypical and who was smart plus contemporary for the time period. Sherman-Palladino added this season was a time of change in Midge’s life. Between moving into a new decade, a new family dynamic and new comedy, they wanted to incorporate that change with Mei and show the changing times through diverse characters who normally would be playing a stereotypical version of themselves.
  4. Are Lenny Bruce and Midge OTP?: While Rachel, aka Midge Maisel, has said in the past their relationship is only platonic, some of the other cast members really feel the two have a deeper connection. When asked why women love Lenny Bruce on the show, Sterling K Brown (Reggie on the show) chimed in to say it’s not only women who love Lenny and support the relationship. He explained that during the comedy after dark scene in Miami he really thought “shit was about to go down” between Midge and Lenny just by the look in their eyes. But will we see the two get together in the near future? I guess we’ll have to watch to find out!
  5. That’s Showbiz: If you watched the season finale, the episodes ends ***SPOILER*** when Reggie tells Susie and Midge they can’t get on the plane and Shy basically fires both of them. Sherman-Palladino was asked why? Her answer: That’s showbiz! It was a lesson for not only Susie but for Midge that you have to be cautious about friendships in showbiz. You really got to see the heartbreak of all three characters according to the creators. The theme of the entire season was just that, know who your friends really are. Everything isn’t what it seems.

While I have been a fan since the first season of this show, I really loved this season because a small part took place in Miami where I am from. I also was able to convince my friend to apply to be an extra on one of the episodes (he’s one of the chauffeurs in the first scene in Miami). My favorite memento of this season was getting to take pictures where they filmed the Fountainblu scenes and sort of reenact them. For your enjoyment, here’s a picture of me on the staircase to nowhere.

Seasons 1-3 are all available on Amazon Prime.
