Universal and AMC (the world’s largest theater chain) made a deal last week that allows new films from the studio to play in homes sooner. Universal’s new films will now have just three weeks of exclusivity in theaters, after that, Universal and its sister studio, Focus Features, has the option of releasing films to video on demand platforms.

On Tuesday, Disney announced they will put Mulan on the streaming service for their Disney+ subscribers for an additional fee of $29.99 and will have ongoing access to the film as long as they want.

The news of the release came as Disney released brutal quarterly results that showed the extent to which the company’s media empire was ravaged by the pandemic. The company reported that it had a net loss of nearly $5 billion in the third quarter this year.

“The pandemic has forced the company to think of “different approaches” to better serve consumers.” CEO of Disney Bob Chapek stated.

Fans of Disney shared their Twitter reactions to the news.
13 Reasons Why (who also acted in Disney Channel’s K.C. Undercover) actor Ross Butler shares on his Twitter account where he stands on the news:

While others weren’t very accepting of the new additional fee attached to the film:

Mulan will be released on the streaming service on Sept. 4 on Disney+ and also premiere in movie theaters in countries

Disney+ now has more than 60 million subscribers. This is an experiment on Disney’s part which means we have to wait until September to see if it pans out.
