Our favorite season here at ABTV isn’t the heat of the summer or chill of the winter, but Awards Season! The start of award season is upon us and Emmy nominations were officially announced Tuesday, July 28th. Award shows are all about honoring content, creators, and innovators, but more important than ever award shows have become about showcasing diversity in all categories. Here is a list of some of the most notable nominees of the 2020 Emmy season whose voices inspire communities and need to be amplified now more than ever.

In the category of a lead actor in a drama, Sterling K. Brown continues to uphold the “This is Us” legacy with his nomination and Billy Porter carries the only nomination for the groundbreaking FX show Pose. Porter is nominated for his role that portrays the story of a Queer Black man’s life during the height of the AIDS epidemic including a spicy romance every Pose fan was living for in the second season. It was an emotional performance that deserves the nomination and is the only representative within an acting category of an overlooked transgender cast and story.

Rain Valdez made history and is now the first Filipino American transgender actress to be nominated for an Emmy for her role in the outstanding web series Razor Tongue. Valdez nomination is the second transgender actress to be nominated in Emmy history. Valdez comes second to Laverne Cox, who is also nominated for her performance in the missed Netflix hit show Orange is the New Black.

Regina King, Octavia Spencer, and Kerry Washington are all nominated in the category of a lead actress in a limited series. Anthony Anderson, Don Cheadle, and Ramy Youssef are all nominated as a lead actor in a comedy series. Issa Rae and Tracee Ellis Ross carried the nominations for comedy for a leading actress. Issa Rae’s comedy show Insecure got four nominations.

Zendaya scored her first Emmy nomination for her role as Rue in Euphoria, alongside history making actress Sandra Oh for Killing Eve. Sandra Oh is known for making Golden Globe history twice last year for being the first Asian to host and first woman of Asian descent to win multiple awards.

This Emmy award season saw a record number of nominations for Black actors and LGBTQIA representation. The full list of all 2020 Emmy Nominees and our ABTV predictions can be found here. Be sure to tune into the award ceremony September 20th, 2020 at 5 pm PST.
