You’ve had time to watch and rewatch the RuVeal video of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 12, so let’s dig deeper into this drag bag of fierceness.

The almost 13-minute video begins with the reigning drag superstar, Yvie Oddly while RuPaul’s song, “American” played in the background. Images of corsets, chains, boots, belt chokers, and leather hats are immediately seen.

According to Jackie Cox, one of the 13 contestants, they were told to wear “urban streetwear with a political/protest vibe.” Some hit the nail on the head, while others missed the mark.

Now, I get it, urban streetwear may not be the aesthetic of some of these queens, but let’s get real, this is the first challenge. They found a way to make it work. Remember, we are not hearing from the queens in this video, just getting our first looks.

There’s already been one controversy that’s emerged almost immediately after the release of this video. Some of RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni queens and fans of the show were not pleased to see any transgender queens in the cast. If you want to hear the arguments, log into your Twitter account and comment away.

Although there are strong emotions on both sides of the argument, it’s important not to allow frustrations and anger to separate an already marginalized community.

As RuPaul said last year to The Sunday Times, “We share a history, the two worlds (of drag and trans people) intersect, but also maintain their unique qualities.”

Let’s not take away any of the excitement and success from the hard working queens that have made it this far and to what some would call, the world’s biggest drag platform. So, to all 13 queens, enjoy the ride of your life and as RuPaul says, “U Betta Werq!”

Lastly, what makes this RuVeal stand out from most of the others, is this time, we also got to see two looks from each queen. Their urban streetwear and at the end of the video, a pledged alliance to drag as we saw them in their red, white and blue eleganza. It’s great to see another side, at least visually, for each of the new 13 queens.
