Welcome back to the CW News Weekly…because you can’t spell “I can’t live without“ without C-W. And we have some major news to report this week.

CW’s Batwoman has officially announced they will be re-casting their title character, who is portrayed by Ruby Rose in the second season. This is nearly unheard of in the entertainment world: to recast our titular superheroine between seasons. Ruby Rose has said this departure is on good terms. She said in a statement,

“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season… I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew, and everyone involved with the show…”

Once Rose revealed this news, Warner Bros. TV, the CW, and Berlanti Productions gave a joint statement regarding the recast. Saying,

“Look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”

Now the concept of a “recast” is definitely nothing new to actors and actresses. A few successful recasts come to mind that you will no doubt recognize:

Friends: Carol Willick (Geller)

This was probably everyone’s first introduction to recasting in the world of prime time TV.

While only appearing for one episode, Ross’ now ex-wife Carol was first portrayed by Anita Barone, but the next time we see Carol, she is permanently portrayed by Jane Sibbett.

Barone apparently left to pursue large roles in projects at the time, and she has resurfaced on various shows in the years since. R.I.P. to that juicy Friends residual check.

Frasier: Roz Doyle

On the topic of the Friends cast, we must remember seeing our favorite coffeehouse folk singer appear on Frasier.

The hilarious Lisa Kudrow was fighting for the role of Frasier’s Roz Doyle alongside Peri Gilpin. Gilpin would go on to embody the infamous producer, but first Kudrow was the casting favorite. It wasn’t until filming began that the team reconsidered and the Roz Doyle role went to Gilpin.

Kudrow admitted that she was initially devastated, but that cut would then lead her to audition for Friends and to become our favorite smelly cat singer. So, all’s well that ends well.

Riverdale: Reggie Mantle

Now, not every recast is caused by the choice of creators or performers.  Some recastings happen due to scheduling issues. Ross Butler has been a part of two very successful series as regular characters- Zach on 13 Reasons Why and also Reggie Mantle on Riverdale– so he had to choose between the roles.

Butler inevitably went with 13 Reasons Why, but this was extremely rewarding for him and his fans, because he went on to do very well as Zach, and this allowed Charles Melton to take over the role. Butler brought Reggie to life, but Mantle has created an even more humorous version of Archie’s best friend and rival that we have all grown to love.

Supernatural: Ruby

A recast that I initially was extremely devastated by was my favorite Supernatural character Ruby, first portrayed by Katie Kassidy and then recast with Genevieve Cortese.

Now, as you can see from these examples, not all recasts are a bad thing; Genevieve Cortese  delivered as Ruby the demon, and this show would lead our favorite Winchester brother Jared Padalecki to eventually propose to Gen.  They now have three amazing kids. Here’s to the happy couple.

What is a major recast that you were extremely confused by? Are there any recasts you were actually happy with? Let us know in the comments below or on social media with #CWNewsWeekly
