Change forces all of us to become uncomfortable. As we continue to protest, petition, and spread awareness of the systematic racism in America, our efforts must reach beyond one community. We’ve seen celebrities post black squares and express their support, but what happens when they log off? Alexis Ohanian Sr. takes his activism a step further to ensure long term advancement.

In an Instagram post, Reddit co-founder and husband to Serena Williams announced he has resigned from the Reddit board. In efforts to do more for the black community, Ohanian strongly encouraged executives to replace his position with a deserving and qualified Black candidate.

I co-founded @reddit 15 years ago to help people find community and a sense of belonging.
It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country. I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: What did you do? I have resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate, and I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate, and I’m starting with a pledge of $1M to @kaepernick7’s @yourrightscamp
I believe resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now. To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop.

His ally-ship raises awareness to more issues than one. Throughout history we’ve seen parents of biracial black children remove themselves from the conversation. Although Ohanian is not Black, his awareness of the struggles his black daughter will face is important. While he can’t personally relate, he steps away from his privilege to have tough conversations with himself in order to fight for his child and use it as an educational tool in the future.

📸 from a hazy day at the Auckland Zoo back in January… We're all going to have a lot of extra family time at-home in these coming weeks. It's going to be hard, but we'll persevere — and as a country, I hope this unites us against a common enemy that doesn't discriminate based on our voting habits. We already closed the @initialized office in SF last week and I'm calling on all other CEOs and business leaders to do the same to the best of their ability. We hope all of you are able to socially distance in these coming weeks in order to help us #FlattenTheCurve 🇺🇸 You will literally be saving lives. We've also partnered with a portfolio company @roman to launch their FREE #covid_19 telehealth assessment. Link in bio. Please take this seriously. It's not a time to panic, but it is a time to be prudent and responsible–especially because the most vulnerable amoung us are very much at risk 🙏

Though some may think resignation is an act of giving up your power, Alexis shows us how powerful it can truly be. His actions don’t stop at stepping down. In addition to this, he has pledged funds to organizations created to tackle racism against Black Americans.

“I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate, and I’m starting with a pledge of one million dollars to Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp,” Ohanian stated.

In order to create a world of equality, we must dismantle the current system. Alexis Ohanian’s monetary donation and resignation are great examples of using privilege to help those who don’t have the same luxury. We cannot achieve change if we are silent when it is time to give up the small chunk of comfortability we have. As we watch time repeat itself, we have the opportunity to be on the right side of history.
