Afterbuzz Quarantine Discovery: Snoh Aalegra

Music is the universal language that can be understood all around the world. It can change your mood or express exactly how you’re feeling. Music may be the very antidote for what we are dealing with now. Afterbuzz TV empathizes and will continue to seek and ‘discover’ new artists to help.

Welcome back to another week of Quarantine Discovery and this week we are highlighting Snoh Aalegra. A Swedish singer and songwriter born to Persian parents now based in Los Angeles.  Snoh Aalegra has a soulful/ sultry voice like Sade but brings that old school blues/ R&B feel like Amy Winehouse that brings you back in time with a modern flair.

Her relatable lyrics about life and relationships hit the soul with power, as we have all experienced being a fool in love in Fool for You or trying hard not to hide your feelings in I Want You Around.

Snoh was discovered by the legendary Prince in 2014 and mentored her until his untimely passing in 2016. She has been in the game for more than 10 years and has worked with many artists Vince Staples, Vic Mensa, Logic and Timbuktu.

She also appeared on Common’s tenth studio album Nobody’s Smiling, and SIA wrote a song on her EP Don’t Explain.  In addition to her song Time being sampled by Drake in the beginning of his song More Life and her single Nothing Burns Like the Cold was used by Apple for their iPhone XS announcement commercial, She has a song produced by Swizz Beatz Wolves Are Out Tonight.

In 2019 Snoh released her second album Ugh, Those Feels Again which peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Top R&B charts. The single I Want You Around reached number 1 on the Billboard R&B songs charts. Well if that’s not enough to check out Snoh Aalegra maybe this will help, on her single Whoa she features actor Mr. Dreamy himself Michael B. Jordan.

Okay let’s get into the playlist. Here are my top 5 songs from Snoh Aalegra that are must haves on your list.

#1 I Want You Around

This is the perfect song to drive around the city in your convertible with the top down and the wind blowing through your hair. The soft beats paired with Snoh’s soothing voice puts you in a reflective but relaxing mood. Her relatable lyrics about those early stages of being with someone you like but not waiting to tell them but having this deep connection and just wanting them to be in your space. She takes us on this journey with lyrics like,

“I fall for you every time I try to resist you.

We can get away, palm trees, beach views, ordinary day,

All I wanna hear is innervisions of replay”

#2 Sometimes

#3 Whoa

This song accompanies the number one pick as Snoh tells a story on her album. Unlike in I Want You Around where she is telling us how she wants this person around now she is describing how the feelings have grown into something more and how this person makes her feel with lyrics like,

Don’t wanna leave, I just wanna be here by your side

You make me feel and believe that we in paradise

‘Cause I don’t feel the ground

No, I don’t feel the ground

But I’m feelin’ right, I’ll tell you what it’s all about

‘Cause you’re makin’ me feel this way

And it’s kinda like whoa”

#4 Situationship

#5 Fool For You

The mix of melodies takes your ears on a musical journey. Snoh’s voice really pops on this song with the simple background as the song compliments her voice.  She talks about being a fool in a relationship, which is something we have all been through, where we can’t seem to break away from it and we keep coming back to something we know isn’t going to work.

“I’ll be a fool for you

I know myself, but I pretend

I leave and I come back again

I’m a fool for you

I love you time and time again

I know just how the story ends”
