ABTV Loves Pixar: Out

Out, a nine-minute animated film, is one of seven from Pixar’s SparkShorts program, which seeks “to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques and experiment with new production workflows,” Jim Morris, the president of Pixar, said on the studio’s website.

The story follows Greg who is moving in with his boyfriend, Manuel and, while excited, he feels major anxiety because he has not come out to his parents yet.

For all the Toy Story fans…did you catch the easter egg?

This story is very relatable yet might also surprise with how Greg learns a lesson with the help of his dog Jim, that for most parents they just want their kids to be happy and loved.

Earlier this year, Pixar’s Onward, its first non-sequel movie since Coco in 2017, featured an openly gay character voiced by Lena Waithe. Some viewers had a real problem with the fact that Waithe’s character, a cyclops-cop, only shows up once, mentions her girlfriend, and never reappears.

Twitter users where really happy when they saw Pixar’s tell the story of a gay couple and a gay character’s coming out story and they shared what it meant to them also trending #PixarOut

Pixar gave the LBGTQ+ community an amazing story in representation a little early before Pride month but that’s OK. It’s okay to share queer stories in entertainment any time of year because the stories you share make us all stronger.
