August 13th was Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which is a day that marks the date when Black women would get equal pay as White men. African American women are the fastest growing entrepreneurs, and the most likely source of income for their families; and still, we are paid 38% less than white men. That means for every dollar a white man is paid, a Black woman only gets 63 cents. Looking at this pay wage gap over a 40 year career means that Black Women lose almost one million dollars.

Emmy winning TV Host, Zuri Hall took to instagram writing in her caption “We cannot achieve #GenderEquity without #RaceEquity. We must dismantle barriers and systems of oppression holding women of color back.”

Black Women are fighting back. With days like Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, we are rallying together to demand that we be paid what we are worth. In the words of Rihanna, PAY ME WHAT YOU OWE ME. We no longer want wages paid for us to survive, we want wages paid to us to thrive.
