ABTV Loves Orange is the New Black and Social Distancing!

One Day at a Time will produce an entirely animated episode, while Parks and Recreation will do a remote reunion special centering on quarantine life. The Hollywood response to Coronavirus health concerns (in terms of production) changes daily as networks and producers desperately seek solutions. The biggest question remains over how scripted series will resume amidst health concerns. Though Parks producer Michael Schur told Deadline “I don’t think there’s any way this is a sustainable method for making TV” after shooting their special, it seems there’s another group of show creators who believe they can.

The team behind Orange is the New Black (Team OITNB) has announced they will shoot and produce an ongoing series around ‘Social Distancing.’ Shot anthology style, each episode will focus on a new group of characters reacting to life in quarantine. Like the network they produce for, the team behind OITNB, Jenji Kohan Tara Herrmann, Blake McCormick, and Hilary Weisman Graham, has always been revolutionary. They were amongst the first of the “must see” Netflix series, if not THE first. Likewise, prior to ‘Me Too’ and woke culture, Team OITNB lead the charge in female-centric storytelling and diverse casting, instead of just reacting to it. Thus, it makes perfect sense that they would not only be the first to figure out how to tell stories under today’s limitations, but also  the ones to tell stories that reflect how said limitations affect us. Knowing this crew of creatives, expect the same diverse casting and journeys, and to explore Corona’s impact on each of us from all backgrounds and relevant situations.

How this team will handle safe production could be as much of a revolution. Much depends on the budget, of course. If the budget allows them to rent a new location for each episode, which most likely Netflix will, then expect a micro crew to shoot and work remotely from an outside trailer. Years ago, when Facetime first came out, directors marveled at their abilities to direct actors in reshoots when schedules prevented being in proximity. Most were surprised how well it worked. Look for more such directing practices for scripted production in the near future. Meantime, congratulations and many thanks to Team OITNB for yet again being leaders in our industry. Best of luck, too. AfterBuzz TV produced the very first Orange is the New Black aftershow and we will surely be producing one for their Social Distancing show, too.
