ABTV TV MY CELEBRITY ENCOUNTER: ANTHONY ANDERSON

Most of us have had at least one celebrity encounter in the span of our lifetimes. The AfterBuzz TV My Celebrity Encounter Series shares personal reminiscences of encounters with favorite celebrities and influencers.  From the time we sat on a plane next to Tiffany Haddish to the time we stood in line at Starbucks behind John Krasinsky, these are the honest and true celebrity encounters our AfterBuzz TV writers have experienced and now share with you.

Black-ish is my family’s favorite show on tv right now, and has been for years. It is one of the few shows that my family watches together. It really is must-see TV for us. If you’re unfamiliar, its premise is: a very well-to-do family whose acerbic patriarch has misgivings about how this privilege has led his kids to be raised in a majority white world. The show follows him hilariously as he challenges his own biases of race and strives to rear his children with an appreciation and recognition of their culture.

It’s been airing for six seasons which means we have watched every kid on that show grow.

Imagine my elation when I got an opportunity to work on the Black-ish set. Let me start by saying I am not your jaded LA type, although I work in the industry. I know it’s a job and I am good at my job, but color me naive when people are working on a set and they have no clue about its content. From the first take I was explaining the premise to people and walking them through who each character was and the way they played into the storyline. I have been watching this show for years, so you know I was talking as if these characters were old friends. Everyone I talked to had questions as none of them had ever seen the show. My mind was blown and as you can imagine getting them caught up on a year worth of storyline was fun but took all day.

At the end of the day as we were all packing up to leave Anthony Anderson walked over to me. I tried to play it cool, but y’all this is Andre Washington, America’s Dad. It’s normally poor form for someone in my position to interact with talent, so I didn’t gush until he asked me about myself. I told him my family were huge fans, from day one, and that we all watched, including my two kids, every Tuesday night.

He thanked me, laughed and asked to see my phone. I told him I couldn’t take a picture on set and might get in trouble. He reassured me in his flabbergasted but joking tone. “I’m the boss! I say you can get a picture!” He grabbed my phone and we took a selfie. He playfully ribbed me about the edition of my iphone. Yes it’s very old! He struggled with it after the picture. So I asked what he was doing. He replied “I’m trying to figure out video on this thing. What edition is this? This ain’t no Iphone!” What results is a hilarious video where he shouts out both of my daughters by name and proceeds to rib my iphone by calling it bootleg! With me asserting that we are best friends and him deadpanning “Your momma is stalking me, on your favorite TV show!”  He continues that  he’s going easy on me because I have kids. He wrapped by saying, “Nice to meet you via your momma’s bootleg IPhone!”

I couldn’t wait to show it to my kids who were impressed that Dre from Blackish actually said their names. To meet a celebrity who has been in entertainment so long, but still takes the time out to reach out and show love and appreciation for their fans was a moment to remember. Before we were Anthony Anderson fans, now we Stan.
