As we continue to use our voices to create a nation based on equality and respect, people are finding ways to support the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Whether you are protesting, donating, or signing petitions, your efforts are making a difference. Some of our favorite celebrities are using their platform to assist the cause and Michael Jordan is one of them.

In a recent Instagram post, Jordan announced that over the next ten years the Jordan Brand is committing $100 million to “organizations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.” Included in the announcement were a few of his thoughts on the movement as a whole.

“Black lives matter. This isn’t a controversial statement. Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people,” Jordan said.

His large donation is valuable to the cause due to its uniqueness. As we push for short term goals, the vision of the future remains clear. The current skewed policies we have in place have been developed over centuries and it will take many years of work to undo them. Jordan’s ten-year commitment will allow us to establish a new foundation. When looking at other causes, we have seen the momentum die out and the support run dry. Efforts similar to Michael Jordan, will ensure that the #BlackLivesMatter movement will not fall victim to these outcomes.

While his charitable act is notable, this isn’t the first time Michael Jordan has spoken on the issue. Days before he announced his donation, Jordan shared a heartfelt message to encourage everyone to keep going and listen to others.

“I don’t have the answers, but our collective voices show strength and the inability to be divided by others,” Jordan wrote. “We must listen to each other, show compassion and empathy and never turn our backs on senseless brutality. We need to continue peaceful expressions against injustice and demand accountability. Our unified voice needs to put pressure on our leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systematic change. Every one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all.”

His message was accompanied by a powerful video created by Nike. Following the ten-part documentary highlighting his career and dedication to basketball and his businesses, we get to see his work continue to inspire and help others. Although we are experiencing tough times, these generous acts allow us to remain hopeful and persistent.

AfterBuzz TV will continue to cover the latest events around the country and justice for George Floyd. Make sure to share this article with a friend to keep the names of Floyd and other innocent Black people alive.
