ABTV Latino Presents: Netflix’s ‘The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia’ Review

Many teenagers go through their first heartbreak by the age of fifteen. Episode titled “Haptics’ ‘ focuses on Ashley’s loss of her boy crush Tad, while uncle Victor is struggling to understand his teenage niece. Uncle Victor is fresh off the bachelor life and in many ways is Ashely’s foil. Uncle Victor constantly meets new girls, while Ashley is focused on the attention of Tad. Luckily for Ashley, she has childhood friend Brooke for relationship advice. Brooke breaks down the steps of getting over a guy. To Ashley’s surprise, uncle Victor takes advice from his business partner to help Ashley get over this stage.

“Haptics” presents Stick Goldstein with the golden opportunity to help out with anything relevant for the first time. He’s often passed off because of his status as an equipment manager instead of an actual player of the football team. Stick seems to be the underlying love interest of Ashely for later episodes, so he does anything possible to get close to her. Ashley and Brooke try to prove that they are in no need of attention from Tad by singing karaoke in front of him and his on again, off again girlfriend Bella. Brooke has a list of accomplishments that everyone going through a breakup needs to experience, this falls in the parameters of step 3. Uncle Victor finds himself once again in parenting shoes when he’s yelled at by Ashley for not understanding Ashley’s needs. I can say from first hand experience as a full time uncle, that we always don’t know what to do, but hey at least we’re trying. I can’t explain how many times my niece wanted something so simple as a 6-year old, but I missed the mark by a mile. Kids, teens and everything in between go through a rollercoaster of figuring themselves and their personalities out like Ashley.

Ashley and Stick finally get a moment to themselves, when Ashley invites Stick to her robotics job at JPL. Stick helps Ashley make a breakthrough when they use a robot to cook and egg in a pan, when they share a hugging moment. The cheesy moment happens right before Stick is friend zoned by Ashley. Let’s face it many of us have been that one who does out of the ordinary things, or unnecessary things to get close to someone we are attracted to. I’ve found myself in Stick’s shoes, once or twice; maybe a few more times. I like to make a mistake more than once, you know, just to make sure.

Ashley gets the moment many hope to have, when Bella and Tad have an argument at the local diner in the final scene of this episode. Many young kids use these moments to get their self confidence back, since it’s not a great feeling to be dumped or “unwanted”. Needless to say if you might be going through a heartbreak at the moment, you might need to watch this episode to come up with your own steps to get over that one who might have broken your heart.
