Kim Kardashian West has come forward in support of her husband, Kanye West after his first presidential campaign event drew controversy and criticism. Most importantly Kim Kardashian West has drawn the focus away from the rally and onto a usually stigmatized conversation of mental health.
Kanye West held his first presidential campaign rally in South Carolina on Sunday to try and persuade voters right before the state’s deadline to file signatures as an independent candidate. Throughout the rally, West made numerous outrageous statements ranging from a rant against historical figure Harriet Tubman to revealing that he originally didn’t want his wife, Kim Kardashian West, to have their first baby to argue his “pro-life” stance.
Following the rally, Kim Kardashian West released a message on Wednesday to her followers on Instagram, asking for compassion not criticism after acknowledging that Kanye West has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
“As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand,’ she wrote. “I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy when it comes to his health. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because off the stigma and misconceptions about mental health.”
Kanye West has previously been very open about his mental health. West spoke to David Letterman in 2016 about being diagnosed as bipolar and about an involuntary psychiatric hold he went through the same year. West has previously said that he does not currently take medication for his condition.
Kim Kardashian West acknowledged that “Kanye is subject to criticism because he is a public figure and his actions at times can cause strong opinions and emotions”, but asks for compassion. Kayne West mental health condition is playing out on the screens of millions of followers, fans, and voters. His mental health is being politicized, mainstreamed, and broadcasted without the privacy for himself and those around him to understand the current mental headspace he is in.
Everyone deserves compassion, empathy, and understanding, so no matter political opinion or music taste Kanye West deserves the respect to have control over the conversation regarding his own mental health and not have the media continue to label and stigmatize his behavior as bizarre, chaotic, or crazy.
