Many celebrities are using their platform to speak up against racism and police brutality. The conversation about inclusivity and respect for Black people in America is still being discussed in 2020. Kerry Washington is one of the many celebrities using their platform to influence change and bring light to the under respected Black creatives, who are not always properly recognized for their work.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Washington said she is glad the world is starting to recognize the trauma Blacks face in America every day.

“I’m grateful that the world is showing up for Black lives in a different way, but this is what has been the reality — this level of danger and anger and fear, maybe trauma and lack of safety — this has been the reality of Black Americans since there were Black Americans,” she said in an interview with ET.

Some people try to avoid having deep conversations about race and how ingrained racism is within America’s society. Washington continued and said it’s not enough anymore to not be racist, because racism is often institutionalized. She said it’s more important for people to demolish the institutions that create and center themselves around racism.

“I think what people are realizing is that it’s not enough to just not be racist — that because our institutions were built in the fabric of racism, because our country was born with Black Americans being designated a fraction of a human being — it’s not enough to just not be racist, we have to be actively anti racist and for that desire to come from a deep understanding that we all deserve full rights of humanity,” she said.

The fight for respect and equality for Blacks within Hollywood is not anything new. Back in 2015, the viral hashtag #OscarsSoWhite circulated around the internet because Black actors and filmmakers were not being recognized for their work.

Even though the world is still fighting for justice and genuine change, there is still hope to be had.

“I’m hoping that all of this new revelatory reflection lends itself to transformation not just of hearts and minds, but also institutional practices,” she concluded.
