The 21x Grammy Award winning Rapper & Designer, Kanye West, 42, has often been very public in the past about his opinions on global politics and current events. Recently, Kayne has been showing unusual behavior recently in some of his tweets concerning his fans and family.

Kanye clearly has an opinion about his marriage and inlaws, yet his wife, Kim Kardashian West, made a statement shortly after, clearing the air and apologizing for his somewhat random outbursts. Kardashian West posted this on her Instagram story the same night.

“As many of you know, Kanye has bipolar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand. I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy when it comes to his health. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions around mental health.

Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor. People who are unaware of, or far removed from this experience can be judgmental and not understand that the individuals themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try.

I understand Kanye is subject to criticism because he is a public figure and his actions at times can cause strong opinions and emotions. He deals with a lot of pressure of being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother. Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words sometimes do not align with his intentions.”

“Living with bipolar disorder does not diminish or invalidate his dreams and his creative ideas, no matter how big or unobtainable they may feel to some. That is part of his genius and as we have all witnessed, many of his big dreams have come true.

We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with it in times when they need it the most. I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this. Thank you for those who have expressed concern for Kanye’s wellbeing and for your understanding. With love and gratitude, Kim Kardashian West.”

Kardashian West’s statement opened many doors for the stigma and complications that can come with mental health. Oftentimes, there is judgment and negative connotations when it comes to anxiety, depression, bipolar or schizophrenia. With one of the most well known celebrities using their platform to open the conversation a little more, it will have such a positive ripple effect! Empowering millions and raising awareness, as well as normalizing it!

I personally relate to Kanye’s story because of having overcome my own anxiety and panic attacks. I know how it feels to constantly feel overwhelmed and anxious, it’s scary and real. A part of me resonates, yet a part of me will never understand what it feels like to go through something so personal and raw, yet you are very well known and your personal life is in the full view of the public.

It’s hard because we all, as the viewers and listeners, may never really fully know what is going on behind closed doors, yet we can offer one thing: compassion. If I personally have learned anything from my own battle with chronic, daily anxiety, it’s that when others hold the space and offer an ear to listen- it’s life changing. Mental Illness can swallow you whole if you do not have a supportive, loving, open circle of family and loved ones. I truly pray for Kanye’s journey moving forward.

I pray that we all can learn more and open our hearts as well as our minds to an “invisible” disorder, that people may not see, yet millions live with on a daily basis. If you, or a loved one is suffering from any mental disorder or addiction- please seek help with the hotlines below!
