WHY WONT IT STOP? JACOB BLAKE PARALYZED AFTER SHOT 7 TIMES BY POLICE!

Sunday, August 23rd, another unarmed black man was shot. It’s been reported that Jacob Blake was breaking up a fight when Kenosha, WI police enforcement were called to the scene. It is unclear what took place before what is shown in the viral video, but from the video you can see that Jacob Blake walks to the other side of his car. As he enters his SUV, one officer grabs Blake by the shirt and begins to open fire. Blake was shot seven times in the back, in front of his three kids 3-, 5- and 8- year old sons. His father has reported that Blake is now paralyzed and doctors are not sure if it is permanent or not.

As an African- American, I don’t even know where to start. This incident takes place as protest are still ongoing for the murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. In a time where there’s nationally a heightened awareness of police brutality, you would hope that officers would be more cautious when deescalating situations. But instead, it seems like they are taking pride in adding people to our list of injustices.

As this story develops, and the internet debates rise, it’s evident that non-black people are still struggling with the reality that the color of our skin can be the trigger to these incidents. Many questions of the victim are being asked. But what did Blake do? Why did Blake walk away? What’s his criminal background? As if the answers to these questions (whatever they are) would justify anyone being shot, in close range, with a car full of kids. It’s disgusting.

NBA players who have been told in the past to “shut up and dribble,” are speaking out loudly. Donovan Mitchell tweeted: “F THE GAMES AND PLAYOFFFS!!! THIS IS SICK AND IS A  REAL PROBLEM WE DEMAND JUSTICE! ITS CRAZY I DONT HAVE ANY WORDS BUT WTF MAN! THIS IS WHY WE DONT FEEL SAFE.”

LeBron James also tweeted:”And ya’ll wonder why we say what we say about the police.”

Jacob Blake was trying to do the right thing, and break up a fight. And still, he was made a target. Shot in front of his innocent kids who will be traumatized for the rest of their lives. The scene is almost metaphoric to the black experience in America. Black people are consistently trying to move forward in life and “do the right thing,” and no matter what, we are always brutally reminded that for us, it’s not about what we do… but what we look like. And the trauma is passed down for the next generation to try to painfully push through.

In 2019, WPR reported Wisconsin as the worst place for African Americans to live. A Wisconsin University study, in 2013 revealed that Wisconsin incarcerated the most black men in America. With a 13 percentage rate, Wisconsin it’s nearly double the country’s rate. The shooting of Jacob Blake comes just two months after the police involved death of another black man, 21yr old Rodney Freeman Jr. of Madison, WI. After a police chase, Freeman was found dead in a lagoon. The officers involved in the case were placed on paid leave, but little to nothing has been said about the case. The Wisconsin Department of Justice has failed with a proper investigation and/or communicating effectively with the victims family.
