ABTV Happy Mothers Day to Maren Morris

When I had a chance to see Maren Morris perform on the Mane Stage at Stagecoach (aka my Mothership) in 2017, I was an instant fan. I was, of course, peripherally familiar with her music at the time, being a born-and-bred Nashville girl myself, but seeing the 5-foot-nothing petite powerhouse own her performance of “My Church” in sparkly short-shorts, a crop top and denim jacket during that weekend in the desert…well, I felt I had seen my spirit animal in the flesh.

So in October 2019, when the “GIRL” queen announced that she was expecting her first child – a boy! – with singer-songwriter hubby Ryan Hurd on her IG page, I was here. for. it. Morris embraced her pregnancy – and all the changes that come with it – with humor, sarcasm, and delight. She chronicled her journey and growing bump through beautiful images and witty captions, posting on January 20th in a fitted black skirt and top duo as she entered her third trimester, “Take my jawline but don’t take my crop tops.”

The mama-to-be even wow’d crowds in a saucy little rhinestone-fringed number during a live show at the Houston Rodeo what seemed like minutes before giving birth (March 7).

And then, on March 23, in a beautiful series of makeup-free photos and intimate moments, Morris announced that her son, Hayes Andrew Hurd, had made his grand entrance into the world.

Morris labored for 30 hours before having an emergency C-section, revealing that her efforts to get her son here safely (during a global pandemic) had not gone as “planned”, but that she was quick to relinquish her plans for the health of her child. She also praised the healthcare workers who took care of her and Hayes openly in a heartfelt post, writing “The admiration we have for the doctors, nurses + healthcare professionals that took care of Hayes & me during our stay cannot be measured in this post. They risked their health every day to make sure ours was okay. I can’t think of anything more selfless than that.”

30 hours of labor ended with an emergency c-section… not what we planned but I learned pretty quickly that night that having a plan for bringing a human into the world is a fool’s errand. All that mattered was that he got here safely. Having him in the middle of a global health crisis was also not in the baby prep books, but here we are. Holding him and healing my body in a maternity ward that’s eerily quiet from us not being allowed visitors or family at this time, but strangely serene. All we hear are monitors beeping and the coos of our infant son. Maybe the sound of the 100th episode of The Office @ryanhurd and I have binged while in here. The admiration we have for the doctors, nurses + healthcare professionals that took care of Hayes & me during our stay cannot be measured in this post. They risked their health every day to make sure ours was okay. I can’t think of anything more selfless than that. Ultimately, I can’t thank every single mother enough for going through what you’ve gone through because I had NO idea how hard it could be, and I’m a measly 4 days in. The world is changing before our eyes and so am I. That’s been a peaceful thing to cling to during these uncertain times. Thinking of you all. 🖤

Watching Morris join the Sisterhood of Motherhood has been such a joy. She’s made the transition seem effortless and even found time to give a haunting performance of her song, “The Bones”, with artist Hozier for the One World: Together At Home concert on April 18th. Happy first Mother’s Day, Maren, from a fellow mama-friend, boy mom, and Southern gal. The sweet stuff just keeps getting sweeter.
