ABTV Quarantine Music Discovery

Music is the universal language. It can change your mood or express exactly how you’re feeling. Music may be the emotional antidote for what we are dealing with now. AfterBuzz TV empathizes and will continue to seek and ‘discover’ new artists to help, and sometimes artists we already love are just nourishing us with fresh new sounds.

Welcome back to another week of Quarantine Music Discovery, and this week we are highlighting the musical genius of Kendrick Lamar.

We at Afterbuzz TV want to wish the musical genius Kendrick Lamar a Happy 33rd Birthday!

Kendrick first popped up in the scene in 2010 with his album Overly Dedicated. Since then he has found a lane of his own and has captured his fans with his deep and lyrical music.

Kendrick is a true visionary – from the lyrics he writes, the beats he picks and the visuals that he pairs with each song. Fans weren’t the only ones who recognized Kendrick’s genius, in 2018 he won a Pulitzer Prize for his most recent album DAMN, which was released in 2017. He is the first hip-hop artist to be honored with this.

In fact, when DAMN was re-released, Kendrick said his album was meant to be played from the last song to the first. So, he released it to put the songs in the correct order, in theory giving the album not just one message, but two.

“I think like a week after the album came out, [fans] realized you can play the album backwards,” he told MTV News. “It plays as a full story and even a better rhythm. It’s one of my favorite rhythms and tempos within the album. It’s something that we definitely premeditate while we’re in the studio.”

Kendrick has a long list of awards and accolades to be proud of, so let’s just go down memory lane. In 2011 Kendrick was on the Freshman Class cover of XXL Magazine, not to mention he has won 163 awards from 399 nominations, 13 grammys, 6 billboard music awards and an ASCAP Vanguard award for his work as a composer.

We want to thank you Kendrick for sharing your musical genius and letting us into your creative world. Happy 33rd Birthday!
