As we continue to push for a just and equal country, there have been a lot of changes over the past couple of months. For years, the NFL’s Washington Redskins has gone back and forth about changing the name and logo of the team. Native Americans have challenged the name and imagery for over fifty years due to the derogatory meaning. After a long history of controversy and tragic events, leadership of the franchise announced that they would officially retire the name and move forward with a rebrand.

Although, ceasing the use of the name and mascot is a huge step, the team must make another big decision and choose a name that will feature the team in a new light. As we wait for the announcement, fans have created potential names and style guides for the new era.

The Red Wolves

With the rebrand, some fans are hoping that the team will find a new fire. Former Washington cornerback Fred Smoot told NBCUniversal that the Red Wolves would be his ideal name. In his interview he mentioned several sources of inspiration. Included in these influences was the red wolves because they are native to the Washington, DC area and are considered an endangered species. Smoot went on to say that the name would allow the team to keep traditions like the HTTR acronym and signature colors, while also bringing in great new design elements.

In light of the @redskins changing their name, I decided to make a full concept brand for the Washington Warriors. The primary logo is the Washington Monument in the shape of an arrow. The secondary logo is a W placed inside of a football, featuring the stars and stripes from the DC flag. The Warriors

As a lot of the designers have developed names that allow the HTTR acronym to still be used, the Washington Warriors would call for a completely different tune. Although the lettering is different, the team could use a design similar to their original spear logo. Fans are also speculating that it might be one of the stronger options after it was revealed that Washington’s owner Dan Snyder filed to trademark “Washington Warriors.”

The name “Washington Redskins” has always been a controversial name due to its derogatory roots. However, with the direction this country is heading and owner Dan Snyder looking into a name change. The time is now for us as fans, players, coaches, and owners to bring more change into the NFL. Getting rid of the name “Redskins” is only one major step along the way. But we can do more. We can honor the brave African American men who risked their lives for our country. Keep in mind that these men were praised as war heroes but were disregarded as black men in society. Let us take another step in the right direction by signing this petition and igniting more social change.

The Red Tails

A few weeks before the official announcement of the change was issued, the idea of naming the team the Washington Red Tails was proposed by a Reddit user. The name pays homage to the first group of African American military pilots, also known as the Tuskegee Airmen, who fought in World War II. During their service, the group painted the tails of their fighter aircrafts red to stand out amongst the other pilots. Although they faced discrimination in and outside of the military, their abilities prevailed and produced an almost perfect record. In an interview with Time Magazine, one of the last aviators showed support for the possible name. “I don’t know of a better way to keep that name alive than to put it on a name right behind ‘Washington’,” said Lt. Col. Harold Brown.

The RedHawks

The Washington RedHawks is a name that gained traction in 2017 after a group of Native American activists emphasized the controversy circulating the team’s current name. After tweeting out links that looked like official sport websites and featured new designs, the activists released a statement emphasizing that their goal was to “show the NFL and the Washington Football franchise how easy, popular and powerful changing the name could be,” according to sportingnews.com.

The talk around the potential name of the Washington football team has fans excited and using their creative juices. By looking at the potential designs, you can see the love and care that the team is surrounded by. We look forward to the rename and can’t wait to see the amazing new logo and uniforms.
