Downtown Disney Reopens and Crowds Flock Disneyland Amid Health Concerns

Disneyland opened nearly 65 years ago, and though it didn’t do as well as they were expecting…it has since brought joy, magic, and a much needed escape for millions of people. But ever since March 15, magic has fizzled due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The phased reopening of the Walt Disney World Resort theme parks begins on Saturday with Magic Kingdom Park and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, followed July 15 by EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Tickets and resort reservations went on sale on Thursday.

There have been many debates over the last few months that California is reopening too fast. Especially, since the cases in Orange County have spiked nearly 100% in three weeks.

Even though Disneyland is still closed, Downtown Disney opened at 10 am Thursday, July 09. Opening the shopping district of the famous Anaheim park began the phased reopening of the park.

People on twitter reacted and called out not only the company but the fans who flocked to it as well.

In an email to Deadline, a Disney spokesperson said, “Seven unions signed agreements to have their employees return to work, the Actors’ Equity rejected our safety protocols and have not made themselves available to continue negotiations, which is unfortunate. We are exercising our right to open without Equity performers.”

Equity says Disney has “locked out” its union members as a way of retaliating against the demand. Disney has said park safety protocols have been accepted by other unions.

In a tweet retweeted by Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu on June 10th, Sidhu hailed Disney’s plans to slowly resume business as a “major milestone in the recovery of Anaheim, California and our nation.”

Disneyland was originally supposed to start the phase of reopening the park on July 17, but given the new cases that have started to rise again in California that decision has been pushed back.

Time will tell if not just the Anaheim park has opened too early or if there will be a new stay-at-home order in California residents’ future.
