Discovering who you are and who you want to be in high school and beyond is always tough. With social media and our peers telling us who we should be and how we should fit in it makes it harder to listen to our hearts and live authentically. Stargirl is here to remind us that when we’re truly happy in who we are, the impact that we have on our environment is truly incredible.

Shelby Simmons joined Chae’ Jones for a Zoom interview on AfterBuzz TV’s Dish Upon A Star to talk about Bunk’d, making Disney Channel History, Disney Plus Original Movie Stargirl, and her favorite things.

Simmons might not be new to Disney as she recurred in Andi Mack, but auditioning as the lead for a Disney show was something that was new for her but something she always wanted to do. She still remembers her audition for Ava very clearly.

“It was very exciting because I had never…well I had never gone out for the lead in a Disney show or one of the leads in a Disney show before. So this was like a big deal for me. I was like, ah man, I gotta really bring it for this one and my comedy skills takes me a lot of work to do that. It does not come naturally. I had to put a lot of work into that. Especially for character and the timing because this is an established show you gotta come up ready to go. They don’t have time to teach how to like, be good at comedy you know? They did that season 1. This is season 4! We gotta be on it. That was probably the biggest challenge.” Simmons recounted.

Bunk’d has made Disney Channel history by being the first show to be given a season 5 pickup. Simmons shared her excitement of the news.

“It was super exciting because it’s like never certain. You hope and you wish and you pray but it’s never certain. Nothing is ever certain in this business, but when it finally becomes certain, you’re like I asked for this? I got this? I get it? It’s not just the cast. It’s the crew, it’s the writers, it’s everybody. We have created a work environment where everyone is happy to come to work.”

Disney Plus original movie Stargirl is a coming-of-age story that explores non-conformity, self-exploration and young love. Simmons shares what she hopes that fans will get from watching the film.

“I want them to take away from this film to really look at who they are and who they want to be. Because really, I feel like everybody needs to have a sit down chat with themselves and figure out, like alright, be very honest. Who are you right now? What are your values? What are your morals? What do you like? What do you not like? What do you tolerate? What don’t you tolerate? Like all of them be honest with yourself and figure out…is that who you want to be?”

Who do you want to be? The best part about this question is that when you discover that answer it’s never too late to change and be that person. Live authentically and do what makes you happy unapologetically.

Simmons’s star continues to shine brightly and she is excited to continue on Ava’s journey in Bunk’d where you can watch episodes on Disney Channel and the DisneyNow app, Stargirl on DisneyPlus and her new film Selfie Dad will be released sometime this year.
