As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Brian Michael Smith has a rare opportunity in Hollywood to play a character that is one hundred percent authentically him.

Smith, who plays Paul Stickland on 9-1-1: Lone Star on FOX, expressed this great feeling on AfterBuzz TV’s after show for the series.

“I was kind of excited because I haven’t got a chance to do any romantic storylines with any of the projects that I’ve kinda worked on. I’ve kind of, you know, either I’ve been the heroic or you know kind of helping other people out in a supporting role, but to actually do my own little mini romantic comedy was like very exciting,” said Smith.

This is the first season of 9-1-1: Lone Star and not only is this a groundbreaking role for Smith but for the LGBTQ+ community to see themselves represented on TV in a major role. Smith has a lot in common with his character Paul as they both express the trails and tributaions of being a transgender male.

“It was also exciting you know just for me personally but then oh what it could mean for other people to see like a trans relationship kinda like unfold like a trans romance and then you know the kind of beauty in that and then what reality, you know, brings to that situation and there’s a lot of misconceptions about,” shared Smith.

FOX is able to tell stories with 9-1-1: Lone Star that are unique and give a new perspective in Hollywood. It’s very rare to see this narrative displayed on network television through the perspective of a recurring character.

Although this is groundbreaking, is Hollywood doing what they need to be doing to move the needle?

“It’s doing a better job for sure,” said Smith. “I feel like in the last, you know, at least three or four years, they’ve been listening a lot more. And they’ve been hearing, and they’ve been letting people who are of that experience tell their stories.”

Smith even elaborated further and named a creator who’s done an amazong job.

“Ryan Murphy’s done a great job of like opening the doors, for people who are queer, people who are of color, and like letting them tell their stories and be creative, and then hiring other people,” he said. “Like giving people jobs, you know so that they can move out of survival mode into thrive mode, and be creative, and like reach audiences in a different way whether they are of the same experience or not. Because people are responding to this show, and people are responding to Pose who are not of the experience, but they just understand what it’s like.”

This series joins just a few shows on network TV that are creating a positive narrative around the LGBTQ+ community. This is just the first season of 9-1-1: Lone Star so there is much more to see from this season and we are locked in, hope you are too.
