Amid America’s move toward racial equality and support for the Black Lives Matter movement, film director Ava DuVernay and actress/TV host Whoopi Goldberg are among six new members elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board Of Governors.

According to Deadline, among the six voted in are Ava DuVernay (Selma, When They See Us) for the director’s branch, Lynette Howell Taylor (A Star Is Born) for the producer’s branch, Debra Zane for casting directors, Stephen Rivkin for film editors, Linda Flowers in makeup and hair stylists and Rob Bredow for visual effects.

“Life is a funny, fascinating thing. You never know what’s around the corner,” DuVernay tweeted on Wednesday following official word from the Academy.

With Ava’s election, along with her five counterparts, brings the number of female board members from 25 to 26 and people of color from 11 to 12.

The new Board of Governors are expected to set the Academy’s strategic vision, preserve the organization’s financial health, and assure the fulfillment of its mission, Deadline reports.

The board has a virtual meeting scheduled for Thursday, where they will determine the date for the 2021 Academy Awards. The show was originally scheduled for February 28, but is expected to possibly be pushed back to March or April.
