ABTV Latino Presents: Netflix’s Latinx The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia

Paulina Chávez shows promising roles for latinos in The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia when Garcia moves in with her bachelor uncle with an overbearing mother living in her home state. JenCarlos plays Victor alongside Chavez  in the show as the younger brother of Garcia’s mom who can barely remember the names of the girls he brings home and now finds himself responsible for a 15 year old. The series presented by Mario Lopez is a step in the right direction for aspiring latinx actors and actresses, not only being relatable but expanding opportunity into comedy for the community.

Packed with constant phone calls from her mom, episode one titled “Breath Mint” shows Chavez struggling to deal with social situations  of peers her own age while living with her uncle who is seen as irresponsible by  his older sister (Garcia’s mom). The episode moves to center around Garcia having her first boy crush and trying to impress him by learning the cues of mutual interest. She is advised in a makeup tutorial by highschool socialite Brooke Bishop, a childhood friend, which turns disastrous when she packs on flamboyant colors in an excessive amount in a solo makeup attempt. In the midst of finding her place in the social environment of her peers, her overbearing mother tries to find reasons to make her return home from her once in a lifetime opportunity as a robotics engineer.

Many latinx viewers can find themselves in the shoes of Ashely Garcia when the episode’s first scene shows Garcia talking into a camera, saying she can make her own decisions when her mom instructs her to get off the ipad. Let’s face it, many latinos have found themselves in this position. I’ve found myself in this position even as a 28 year-old, living out of state for work.  This can raise the question, do latino parents ever relinquish control of their children, or will we all deal with our mom and dad until the end of time. A second point to make is, isn’t there an uncle Victor in every family who is actually really successful because he’s gone against the families normal trend of kids and marriage ensuring financial stability but the family finds him irresponsible for some reason.

This series is definitely a binge worthy watch to enjoy with adults and tweens. Its comedic theme brings  an element for each age group to enjoy. This is an especially enjoyable show for those latinos who still live at home with overbearing parents even as an adult.  If you find yourself struggling to raise a teenager or if you’re a teenager dealing with an awkward stage this series is a perfect fit to relate to the dysfunction of growing up in 2020 minus the PH.D.
