Comedian, actress, writer and activist, Aida or better known as Aida Margarita Rodriguez Paradas, is part of “They Ready” a Netflix Series presented by Tiffany Haddish. According to “The Young Turksan American left news and opinionated show on YouTube, they honor her for breaking barriers in the latino entertainment community;

“Aida made history as the first Latina to appear in two specials airing in one month on both HBO and Showtime and she was handpicked by director Taylor Hackford for his film “The Comedian” starring Robert De Niro.”

Aida speaks candidly about being a mom, misogyny, familia, racism in the latino community and being homeless. She had an epiphany while living in her car with her two sons, that she would be happy and successful if she lived her dream of being a standup comic in Hollywood; and boy she was right! The Netflix special begins with the two comedians at a nail salon, Tiffany Haddish and Aida reminiscing about morning phone calls of them crying to each other, sexism, believing in themselves, spirituality and staying focused. They made a pack that whoever made it first would “throw the rope back” and Tiffany being the one who made it first, kept her word. Early on in Aida’s career Tiffany’s sage advice to her was, “Don’t sleep with the comedians, and just keep going.” They have been great friends ever since.

Aida uses traumatic events from her life and transforms them into comedic material. You can see that for her it is very cathartic. She is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, and has a history of having to deal with racism because of her Afro-Latino heritage and darker skin tone.

In her standup routine she states;

“Latinos are racists, they’re racists with others and they’re racist with each other too.”

She also explains in her routine how latinos compare themselves to each other, from how they speak spanish, to having lighter skin tone and even bragging about having legal U.S. Citizenship.

Her showcase covers her many experiences, about being kidnapped twice by different family members, longing for a white woman who bakes pie to rescue her from her madre’s killer boyfriend and her childhood being unstable. Being forced to be her abuelitas translator was embarrassing and yet still adventurous. Especially when having to discuss grownup matters, such as money, cheating and her abuelitas STD’s. Dealing with the fear of her Cuban racist stepfather and feeling like the Rosa Parks of her familia, she eventually realized the power within herself and became the strong latina she is today.

Although she wasn’t rescued by the white woman with the missing cat, I think she proved to be an authentic baddass latina, true to who she is and unapologetic. I believe we can all learn something from this funny fuerte mujer, La risa es la mejor Medicina ( Laughter is the Best Medicine). Pura Vida!

Be Inspired! Pura Vida!
