I’ve been waiting for Never Have I Ever to drop on Netflix since it was announced. There has never been a Mindy Kaling creation that I haven’t loved and this series is no different.

The show follows Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her girl gang, Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) and Eleanor (Ramona Young), as they fight the good fight every day to live their best high school lives. Here are the top 5 reasons why you should watch right along with me!

“We are glamourous women of color, who deserve a sexy high school life.” – Devi

This quote from the first episode sums up the plot perfectly. These “nerds” are on a quest to experience everything they possibly can as soon as possible to rebrand. Their primary goal mainly involves getting significant others. They’re less worried about popularity and more focused on making sure they get everything that everyone else gets.

Multi-Cultural Perspective

Our leading ladies are all different ethnicities and we finally don’t have to point it out constantly. We experience their cultural differences through their home lives, but also see the commonalities day-to-day. They handle the obvious need for their diverse cast on our screens by poking fun at racial stereotypes, but only when it’s called for. Otherwise, the story is purely based on young people from various backgrounds going through the same struggles with their family expectations sprinkled in.

Slightly More Realistic Hot Guy Circle

When we were introduced to the “hot pocket” at Sherman Oaks High, it looked a lot different than any other teen rom com I’ve seen before. The group is filled with a wide range of fellas that aren’t often represented in entertainment “hot” categories. It’s definitely better than it was 10 years ago, but this show really pushes the ratio envelope. Don’t worry, they’re still all way more attractive than any human you’ve ever seen in person.

The. Writing. Is. So. Good.

It’s very easy to binge this show because the dialogue is so fun to listen to. The writers are the true heroes of this show, as they usually are, especially Mindy’s teams. Each character has such a specific way of speaking, all with their own wit. The relationships are so well developed that you look forward to when any pair or group is having a conversation, because of their smart, hilarious banter.

John McEnroe

That’s right. Tennis champion John McEnroe plays an integral role in this series as the commentator to Devi’s story, a bit different from the Australian Open. I won’t spoil it here, but I promise you that it makes sense in a meaningful way. As a child from a tennis family, his presence was strangely calming for me. It’s also incredibly funny to hear him say millennial slang. He’s the show’s constant voice of reality and you’ll be very glad he’s there.

I’m not going to lie to you, I decided to put all of my responsibilities aside to binge this season twice in one day. I’m not ashamed. These are only a few of the reasons why you should give this show a try. You can watch the first season on Netflix now!
