Celebrating Genealogy: Jennifer Lawrence

We have seen her on the big screen in a myriad of roles, from resistance hero to shapeshifting vigilante.  With her ability to kick ass, make us laugh, and maintain a certain Hollywood elegance we are sure to be seeing her on screen for a long time. It is no surprise that her family roots connect her to some rather impressive artistic cousins.

The author of “To Kill A Mockingbird” is 6th cousins twice removed to Jennifer Lawrence. Maybe they will remake To Kill a Mockingbird and Jennifer will be in it. That might be cool. This family connection is through their shared ancestors Thomas Jefferson and Mary Field.

Now don’t confuse J-Law’s 7th great grandfather Thomas Jefferson with the president. In fact, he is the grandfather of Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States. Which means…

The third president of these United States is 1st cousins 7 times removed from Jennifer Lawrence through his grandparents Thomas and Mary Field Jefferson. While he is not known for being artistic he is remembered for being a most prolific writer. I think we can all agree that co-writing the Declaration of Independence merits recognition as an artistic author. Maybe J-Law should try her hand at writing.

Howard Hughes

Speaking of prolific, the Aviator himself is 6th cousin 3 times removed to Jennifer Lawrence via their shared ancestor Ursula Presley. Howard Hughes was a massively successful film tycoon, business magnate, and record setting pilot. We should all live such ambitious lives.  I think J-law is in good familial company.

Jeremy Renner

The Avengers star is 5th cousin 1 time removed from Jennifer Lawrence (this just means he’s one generation older than J-Law).

Their family connection is through their shared ancestors Robert Tague and Sarah Caplinger of Kentucky. I wonder if they knew they were related when they co-starred in American Hustle together. I like to think their success as action stars is because of their Kentucky roots (I have family roots in Kentucky too). Regardless, it is clear they are both doing incredibly well in their careers as film actors.
