BLM Community, More Than Just a Hashtag: Race and Inequality

Black Hollywood Live and AfterBuzzTV’s special series, BLM Community, More Than Just A Hashtag and host Shaka Smith provides all the latest news and commentary surrounding George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter campaign.

On this edition, the panel gave their reactions to the arrest and charging of all four officers. Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng were all charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter, facing up to 40 years on the former charge and up to 10 years on the latter charge. Additionally, Minnesota AG Keith Ellison added the charge of second-degree murder for Derek Chauvin, also carrying a sentence up to 40 years and is open to upgrading the charge to first degree should the continued investigation support it. All panelists saw hope in the arrests but cited the continued need for vigilance to see the process though to conviction.

The panel also turned to defense secretary Marc Esper’s decision to publicly counter Trump on the use of the Insurgency Act to authorize the military to engage with civilians. Addressing Trump’s Twitter language and recent photo op at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington DC, each discussed the lack of leadership from the Trump administration resulting in uneven responses on the ground and inflamed tensions.

The panel also covered the recent #BlackOutTuesday trend that dominated social media and the concept of performative activism. Turning directly to the political landscape, they discussed Trump’s response to the protests, and whether or not it is now a must for Biden’s 2020 Vice Presidential search to be limited to a black woman (Biden has previously committed to selecting a woman as his running mate). The panelists weighed the pros and cons of Senator Kamala Harris, Representative Val Demings and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

The panel concluded by providing resources and advice specifically for non-black allies to support the black community, several of which are included below.
