One of the popular new television shows right now is Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist on NBC, with its catchy renditions of songs, exciting dance numbers, and of course the powerhouse cast.

Kapil Talwalkar, who plays Tobin, was a special guest on AfterBuzzTV’s aftershow network on Sunday night with hosts, Brandon Hanna, Emily Mae, Amir Yassi and Kittie Kaboom as they broke down Episode 7, Season 1. On the aftershow he discussed his audition process, spoke about diversity, and how this show is changing network television.

The casting process was intense and once he was cast it went by quickly, Talwalkar shared, ”The audition process was kind of crazy, they wanted you to do ‘All I Do Is Win’… I knew the next morning that I booked it and I was on a flight,” Talwalkar shared with excitement, “I had a table read later that evening for all of NBC, literally the entire cast… it was insane!”

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist stars Jane Levy, John Clarence Stewart, Skylar Astin, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Gallagher, Alex Newell, India de Beaufort, Lauren Graham and more as they dance and sing their way through their musical inner monologues.

Kapil shared that the writers and show runners work collaboratively with the cast to make the most authentic and fun show possible. He shared how important a show like this is for a larger network, “because of the representation, first of all. Seeing, you know, Black representation, Indian representation, we got Latin representation this week…and LGBTQ plus representation, which is wonderful. And done in the most…our showrunner is so thoughtful,” Talwalkar said.

Kapil shared how he would sit down with the showrunner and help him navigate a specific topic from his own perspective. “There was some stuff in this episode, actually, “I think the immigrant experience is not exactly like this, it would be more like this, he’s like, “okay let’s work with it, let’s change it,” he shared.

Talwalkar’s previous television and stage credits include American Princess, Arranged and onstage in East West Players critically acclaimed production of Animals Out of Paper.

Every week our AfterBuzz Zoeys Playlist hosts have a special segment where we share our own inner musical monologues based on the episode’s theme. We chose four songs around friendship including “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers, “That Boy is Mine” by Brandy & Monica, “Best Friend” by Brandy, and “So Far Away” by Carole King.

Talwalkar responded to our segment by surprising us all, “First of all I do want to say this, and this is going to like, kill you guys…but one of the songs that you guys just mentioned of the five or the four is one of the biggest numbers coming up.” he said. We can’t wait to see what song it is!
