5 Celebrities that speak openly about mental health in 2020

Mental health affects everyone, of all ages, genders and races. Ranging from anxiety to depression, we all at one point in our lives have experienced inner struggles.

Celebrities lately have been very vocal about their own personal struggles. It’s amazing to see these icons with huge outreach and platforms on social media, spreading their message. Below, are the top 5 celebrities who are speaking openly about their mental health in 2020!

Demi Lovato (the Disney child star, singer/songwriter, actress and mental health advocate) has been extremely open about her journey with eating disorders and bipolar disorder- just recently though, during her Grammy performance with the song, “Anyone” she did multiple sit down interviews explaining that she was shocked that no one who read the lyrics saw that it was a cry for help(*)( Lovato wrote the song write before her relapse in 2019)

Selena Gomez (the Disney child star, singer/songwriter, actress) detailed her break from the spotlight during early 2017 and has been a continuous supporter for self-care. In a recent interview with WSJ magazine, Gomez stated, “I had low self-esteem, and that’s something I work on continuously. But I feel so empowered because I’ve gained so much knowledge about what was going on mentally. My highs were really high, and my lows would take me out for weeks at a time.” In the same interview, Gomez stated that she is“on the right medication and that her life has been completely changed”.

Justin Bieber– (the child star, singer/songwriter and dancer) has had his dark moments with substance abuse during his rise to fame- but in his new docu-series, “Seasons”, on You tube(which premiered Jan 27th, 2020) Justin opens up about his own struggles with anxiety and depression, specifically in the 5th episode, “The Dark Season”, we get a glimpse into his road to recovery and learn that he is currently taking anti-depressants. He also opens up about suffering from Lyme disease, as well as taking NAD IV treatments to help his body heal after taking drugs for an extended period of time.

Lady Gaga– (the pop star, singer/songwriter, philanthropist and dancer) has been vocal about her struggles in the past with mental health issues such as depression and severe anxiety- during Oprah Winfrey’s 2020 tour, gaga spoke on stage about her journey. She opened up about being raped, chronic pain, trauma, PTSD and the balance of being a performer with self-care(*). Taylor Swift– ( the pop star icon, singer/songwriter) Shared in her new documentary on Netflix, “Miss Americana”, that she suffered from anxiety that stemmed from comments made about her body by the media that triggered her eating disorder(*).
