Robin Williams’ varied career landed him a laundry list of iconic roles, The Genie notwithstanding. His performance in 1992’s Aladdin is generally considered one of the best voice performances of all time, earning him numerous accolades and nominations.
Well, rumor has it that his late legacy may be passed to Will Smith, who is primed to take on the role in the 2019 live adaption being produced by Dan Lin, written by John August, and directed by Guy Ritchie.
Disney has been eager to capitalize on the success of the “Renaissance Era” animated classics, and for good reason. Beauty And The Beast just surpassed the 1B box office Mark, against a budget of approximately $160 million. In 2015, Cinderella made just south of $600 million, against a $100 dollar budget.
If the trend continues, analysts expect that Aladdin could reach the same critical and commercial success of it’s predecessors, and having a box office staple like Will Smith certainly can’t hurt. For now, we’ll just have to wait patiently as development proceeds!
