South African actor Sean Cameron Michael talks to host Zoe Hewitt about his work on the Emmy-nominated series ‘Black Sails’, the perils of doing stuntwork and his new film, ‘Last Broken Darkness’.
MICHAEL on ‘BLACK SAILS’:
Michael says: “It’s always great working on a period piece. You put on the high heels and the wigs. For me as an actor, everything is about climbing into a character…and those costumes were tailor-made in London. …The funniest moment for me, really, from ‘Black Sails’ was in season one where there’s a scene…where [I’m] having a conversation at home and [another actor] comes up to me and puts on my wig. I don’t know if you know, but when you put on a wig, especially for tv, it’s usually pinned and clipped and that sort of thing. Obviously, it was part of the scene so it took a couple of takes for him to put the wig on and for the wig not to cover my eyes. It was a lot of fun; it was really a great, great show to work on and a wonderful opportunity for me.”
MICHAEL on STUNTS:
Michael says: “It’s not about toughening up and being able to take it, it’s because you’re doing take after take. …I remember years ago I was working on another pirate show called ‘Crusoe’ …and I had a dying scene in that where my character had been poisoned. I was lying on this wooden table and choking to death. Obviously my whole body was shaking and my head was hitting the table the whole time. And, when we wrapped from that I had to go through two weeks of [physical therapy] because I hurt my neck so badly.”
MICHAEL on ‘LAST BROKEN DARKNESS’:
Michael says: “It’s an indie film…that was essentially 26 night shoots.
It was all shot on location…and you’d arrive on location at 1, 2 in the afternoon and 6 in the morning you’d still be filming. It was a really grueling shoot.”
