Master Magician

Rob Lake, the youngest magician to ever receive the Merlin Award for International Stage Magician of the Year (the equivalent of an Oscar or Emmy) talks to host Zoe Hewitt about developing new illusions, his intense travel routine and consulting on tv, film and theatrical productions.

LAKE on DEVELOPING NEW ILLUSIONS:

Lake says: “I’m always trying to think of new illusions. It takes several years for an illusion to make it into the show. One that we just put in last year I was developing for eight years. It’s the most difficult illusion I’ve done. The hardest part of the entire show. …Usually I’ll have an idea of the presentation and then we’ll reverse engineer all the ways to make it happen and we’ll test things and try prototypes and…many times go back to the drawing board and start again.”

LAKE on TRAVEL:

Lake says: “We have four semi truck that travel the show. …We travel like an army. …I live in hotels. I love travel…but there are things I do to make it feel more like home. Like, I travel with my own kitchen set up. I have my juicer and blender and little stove top. I’ve set off smoke alarms in hotels before.”

LAKE on MAGIC CONSULTING:

Lake says: “Sometimes I create magic or illusions for tv shows that have a magician character who is normally an actor. …We’ve done the same for stage shows, musicals: ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’. …Sometimes [productions] will call during the writing phase and have me look over the script. And, I’ll say ‘well, a magician would more likely do this or say this’ or [explain] this is going to be very challenging to teach an actor, but here’s what you can do to accomplish the same sort of thing.”
