E! announced that the People’s Choice Awards will be broadcasted and produced by NBCUniversal’s Wilshire Studios, which also produces E!’s red carpet coverage.
“Rooted in pop culture and celebrity, the ‘People’s Choice Awards’ is a natural extension for E! and we are excited to evolve and supercharge this fan-centered event for the next generation in a way that only E! can,” said Adam Stotsky, president of E!.
People’s Choice Awards was originally created in 1975 by Robert Stivers and had Mark Burnett producing for the past eight years on the CBS network.
Beginning in 2018, E! will air the award show with its 44th annual installment.
Stotsky said, “Over two decades ago, E! created the red carpet experience and became the leading destination for fans on Hollywood’s biggest nights. With this acquisition, we are harnessing our entertainment authority, live event expertise and huge multi-platform reach to take fans beyond the red carpet and offer a true end to end consumer experience.”
CBS was the home for the People’s Choice Awards but since the most recent show, hosted in January by Joel McHale, drew 6.6 million viewers and an all-time low 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demo.
