It might not have been the sequel to 9 to 5 fans have been waiting for, but the reunion of Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton was more than enough to appease our appetites.
Lily Tomlin was the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at Sunday night’s SAG Awards, being honored by none other than Dolly Parton herself. Before introducing her former costar, Parton couldn’t help but first poke fun at herself.
“I might say Lily is getting an award for something I’ve spent my whole life trying to avoid, a SAG award. I see something sagging, I’m calling Dr. Markowitz to get that nipped, tucked and stuffed right away.” Parton joked.
As Tomlin graced the stage to accept the award, she had the audience rolling on the ground as she spoke in classic comedic fashion. While the legend gave her advice, she couldn’t help but sprinkle in some humor, even putting Meryl Streep on blast.
“And don’t be anxious about missing an opportunity, behind every failure is an opportunity someone wishes they had missed,” Tomlin spoke as Streep and the rest of Hollywood laughed.
“Meryl is laughing at this, and there’s absolutely no time she’s had a failure.”
Tomlin also thanked her partner Jane Wagner along with everyone who has helped her along the way through her epic career.
“There are so many people – more people, to thank for helping me with my achievements than I actually have achievements.”
With her speech coming to an end, Tomlin continued the political trend of the night, wrapping up with a philanthropic conclusion.
“What sign should I make for the next march? So much to do: global warming, Standing Rock, LGBT issues, Chinese missiles, immigration – thank you, thank you to the Screen Actor’s Guild and to SAG-AFTRA.”
Tomlin also made history at the ceremony, being the first recipient of the award to be up for nomination for her role as Frankie in Netflix’s Grace and Frankie.
With a career spanning well over 50 years, including numerous roles in film and television, Tomlin has garnered a Grammy Award, two Tony Awards, and seven Emmy Awards. Along with her accomplishments, Tomlin has given back to the community with her philanthropic work including civil rights, LGBTQ rights, animal rights, and healthcare. With all of these accolades under her belt, it’s no wonder Tomlin was a perfect fit for this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
